BookClub Kit: Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors

While writing her previous novel, Cleopatra and Frankenstein, a friend made the comment to Coco “Until you know my sisters, you don’t know me.” Coco began wondering: “Was this true of me and my siblings?” — “Could you know me if you didn’t know them? And, if it was true, who would I be if I lost one of them?”— and with that, the seed was planted for Blue Sisters

Study Guide:

  • Watch Coco Mellors on Today w/ Jenna Bush answering fan questions and discussing why she writes about sisters, the comparisons to Little Women and that iconology of four sisters that become three, and why she was personally interested in writing about addiction and sobriety.

  • Read this Elle Article by Caelan McMichael on the family of the book being “Deeply Loving and Deeply F-ed Up”

  • Read a NYTimes Review by Melissa Lozada-Oliva

  • Read this Guardian Article by Alice Kemp-Habib on how Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums” was a North Star for Mellors while grappling with balancing the sisters in the book

  • Watch Dymocks BookClub Video with Coco Mellors herself, getting into the inspiration for Blue Sisters - “the intense and sticky and tenacious love that exists between siblings” - and the hope she finds in the story as an example of what unconditional love can look like.

  • Listen to the #PouredOver Podcast episode on Blue Sisters to hear how Mellors wanted to explore the kaleidoscopic view of one person, how all these characters share the same family and yet have unique interpretations of one another.
